For me, the heady arrangements dreamt up by Daniel Rossen for his various projects (Department of Eagles, Grizzly Bear) simply have no modern day comparisons. It’s in Rossen’s ability to form a mild song structure and blow it apart and reattach it as this beautiful, free-flowing sonnet. In fact, we hear his lyrics float and stretch, constantly reaching to keep up with the jangly guitars and melancholy baroque pop. The music on the Silent Hour/Golden Mile EP holds a rich complexity and an overabundance of melody that taken as a whole sounds oddly familiar, and yet profoundly distinct.
